Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) - Job Description
- **Job Title:** Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)
- **Reports To:** Director of Nursing (DON) / Executive Director
- **Work Hours:** Full-time, with on-call responsibilities, including evenings and weekends as needed
- **Work Attire:** Business casual with white lab coat or Morning Pointe issued scrubs with white lab coat.
Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) is a key leadership position that supports the Director of Nursing (DON) in overseeing the quality delivery of resident care and managing nursing services within the community. The ADON assists in developing and supervising care delivery systems, coordinates clinical operations, and ensures compliance with policies and regulatory guidelines. This role is expected to serve as acting DON in the Director’s absence, with full responsibility for clinical operations, staff management, and resident care.
Primary Responsibilities
Resident-Centered Care
- Provide clinical leadership and direct supervision to Resident Caregivers, Medication Assistants, and licensed nursing staff.
- Conduct and oversee comprehensive pre-admission, admission, routine, and change-of-condition assessments.
- Participate in and lead care plan conferences; update care plans and service records to reflect current needs.
- Collaborate with physicians, pharmacies, and allied health providers to ensure quality outcomes.
- Monitor medication administration, ensure accurate Medication Administration Records (MARs), and perform medication cart and MAR audits.
- Visit residents temporarily out of the community to maintain continuity of care.
Leadership and Supervision
- Assist in hiring, training, onboarding, and mentoring nursing and care staff.
- Support or conduct regular performance evaluations and corrective actions in collaboration with the DON and Executive Director.
- Provide guidance and accountability for clinical team performance and staff development.
- Serve as a role model of professionalism and resident advocacy, leading by example.
Administrative and Operational Duties
- Participate in scheduling of clinical and non-clinical staff and ensure adequate staffing coverage.
- Monitor and manage staff time records, including time clock reviews and overtime prevention.
- Assist with audits, surveys, licensing inspections, and develop plans of correction when needed.
- Ensure adherence to infection control, resident safety protocols, and quality assurance measures.
- Maintain current inventory of care supplies and coordinate with ancillary providers.
Acting as DON When Required
- Assume full responsibility for DON duties in the event of the DON's absence or unavailability.
- Communicate with families, physicians, regulatory agencies, and executive leadership as necessary.
- Ensure continuity of care, staff oversight, and compliance with community standards.
Other Duties
- Provide on-call clinical support per facility rotation or as assigned.
- Attend and/or complete CEUs and other required in-services for licensure and company policy compliance.
- Protect resident rights, confidentiality, and personal property in accordance with company policy.
Qualifications
- Active LPN llicense in good standing with the state.
- Minimum 1 year in a clinical supervisory role; 3+ years preferred in long-term care, assisted living, or memory care.
- Experience with staff development, quality improvement, and case management strongly preferred.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, EMR systems, and ability to quickly learn new platforms.
